AMENDMENT!! Path closure at Sgwd Isaf Clun Gwyn – REVISED access for gorge-walking groups

Further to our recent messages we have received the following new information and illustration from NRW:

“Our contractors are well on with developing the stone steps and timber post and rail handrails up the slope adjacent to Sgwd Isaf Clun Gwyn (in the area shaded pink below).”

  • The temporary fence at the foot of the slope has been erected to prevent public incursion into an active worksite – i.e. the area between the waterfall and the fence. Due to the arrangement of the new stone steps and permanent handrails (throughout the area shaded pink), gorge walkers will no longer be able to gain access around the near end of this temporary post and rail fence, so access for gorge walking groups (blue line) can now be achieved by climbing under the ‘new’ section of temporary fence (shown in brown – we’re assured that there’s plenty of space to do this) and over a new ‘permanent’ section of post and rail fence (shown in yellow) located in front of the large boulder (this new fence has been concreted-in; but as with all fence crossing, do assure yourselves that it’s safe to climb over before doing so). We’re open to feedback on how well this works!!
  • Since there will be no works taking place on Saturdays and Sundays, gorge-walking groups may enter the area freely (from above or below).
  • However, on weekdays, gorge walking leaders must first check whether there are any active works ongoing and, if so, they must liaise with the contractor on site to obtain permission to enter the area (either from the waterfall or by passing the fence). We appreciate that groups may not wish to commit to a gorge journey without knowing in advance whether this access will be possible, although we’re hoping the contractors will make every effort to oblige; if you do try this out, please let us know how well it’s working.

NB:

  • loose materials etc. may be present on site, so appropriate caution should be exercised in the work area; and
  • please be prepared to assure members of the public that you have ‘special permission’ to be in this area and they shouldn’t be tempted to follow you!

We hope this offers a workable compromise compared with the complete closure of the path. NRW will monitor the situation and if it becomes untenable for the contractors to progress their works in a safe and timely manner, they may need to revisit this decision – so please do your best to make things easy for them. Thanks!
