The recent rains have led to a new water gully appearing from the field above Porth yr Ogof which is directing water straight into the ‘letterbox aven’ / ‘sloping aven’. The water itself isn’t likely to be too much of a problem except in flood conditions BUT it has already eroded away the step down into the fenced-off area at the aven’s entrance, leaving the wooden board which used to be the front of the step exposed as a significant trip hazard! There is also a risk that further erosion could start to undermine the rocks at the top of the aven. Brecon Beacons National Park Authority has been alerted to this issue and asked what they can do to resolve it. Be careful out there!
