The Outdoor Partnership and British Mountaineering Council are conducting a consultation regarding the feasibility of a community climbing wall being created in the Newport city area. To date, a consultation has been circulated within the local Newport climbing community who have shown support for the project. We are now looking to gather information and opinions from organisations/professionals working in the city, from outdoor professionals in the area and from the public.
This is still very much a consultation at this point, we have not identified a potential site or further stakeholders.
Over the past 20 years, Climbing and Bouldering has seen a huge surge in popularity, mainly due to the development of climbing facilities promoting grass roots participation of the sport. Climbing made its debut at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, bringing it further into the mainstream and showcasing talent across the globe. It is now believed that over 25 million people climb on a regular basis!
There are numerous benefits to individuals, communities and the environment through participation in climbing. To name a few, Climbing and Bouldering:
- Improves physical, mental health & wellbeing
- Improves self-esteem, mental agility and self awareness
- Promotes problem solving skills, mental concentration and focus
- Promotes education on the need to respect, value and preserve nature
- Provides alternative career pathways
The following consultations will help The Outdoor Partnership and British Mountaineering Council develop a strategic development plan to support the people of Gwent to get engaged and active, through outdoor activities.
