Hazard to paddlers on Upper Usk, Upper Wye and Lower Irfon: fish traps in operation during March to May

Natural Resources Wales has advised us that they will once again be operating fish traps on the Upper Usk (at Abercamlais on the Sennybridge-Aberbran section) during the period March-May 2024 (see attached document) AND Canoe Wales has advised us of similar operations by Swansea University on the Upper Wye at Llanstephan and the Irfon at Builth Wells (see Fyke nets and a rotary screw trap (RST) in the Wye valley). Although we anticipate few paddlers using these rivers during this period, anyone contemplating a trip on these sections needs to be aware of this hazard: the trap will have cables extending across the entire river and therefore poses a significant danger to paddlers, who will need to portage around the device (which will be manned while in operation). Warning notices will be posted.
