Porth yr Ogof timber – beware of current instability (and sheep carcass!) AND please can you help clear more on Mon 17 Nov?

A very small team of cavers (supported by BBNPA volunteers and visiting caving groups) managed to clear an amazing amount of timber from the cave today – and the dead sheep that was entangled in it – THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR GREAT EFFORTS! However, much of what is left should not be considered stable and could move without warning so please take care moving through the main entrance area until more of it can be cleared. Also, the largest tree partially blocking river left has an undercut river bed on the downstream side – it drops off into waist deep water so groups, especially those with younger participants should be wary. AND there is currently a large black bag just inside the entrance on the left hand side. This contains a dead sheep which is awaiting collection by BBNPA’s fallen stock contractor. It should only be there for a day or two but please make sure that groups give it a wide berth!! Thanks to Piers Hallihan for the attached photos.

We now need more help to clear the rest of the timber on Mon 17 Nov 9am-3pm; it would be great to see a good team of the regular cave users supporting the BBNPA wardens who’ll be there again, this time with bigger chainsaws available! Please drop us an e-mail if you’re able to help. Thanks!

  1. Will the clearing planned for the 17th mean that the cave is closed? Or can group go in and use the right hand series? Thanks Ryan
