Recently, the BCA’s Qualifications Management Committee sent an email update/broadcast (copied below) to all those registered on LCMLA or CIC awards via Just Go site. However, quite a few bounced back due to incorrect or missing email addresses. So, if you’re registered on British Caving | JustGo, please check that your contact details are up to date (to do this, login to the site, look on PROFILE and click the Update Details button). Any problems with this please email trainadmin@british-caving.org.uk.
Copy of Broadcast
Welcome to QMC’s first broadcast to all training award participants.
From time to time, QMC will issue these broadcasts to support award holders and others involved in the scheme. They are not a replacement for staying current—whether by progressing within the scheme or attending update workshops—but rather a way of sharing solutions to frequently asked questions and addressing common queries received by the training administrator.
If you haven’t already, we encourage you to opt in to receive future messages from QMC (we promise not to overload your inbox!). To do this, log in to the QMS (link below), go to “My Profile”, select “Opt Ins”, and tick the box to receive messages from Training (QMC).
1. How to Print Your Certificate
If you are an award holder, you can print your own certificate at any time. Click on this link to download instructions How To Print Your Certificate
2. Expiry of Certificates
To maintain a valid award, you must ensure your qualification is updated before the expiry date shown on your certificate.
Although the QMS issues reminder emails, we cannot guarantee their arrival. It is therefore essential that you:
- Keep your contact information up to date in your account.
- Make a note of your own expiry date.
- Book onto an update workshop well in advance.
Please note: Failure to receive a reminder will not be considered a valid reason for failing to update your award on time.
3. Key Websites
There are two key websites you should be familiar with:
- Training Account: https://britishcaving.justgo.com
- Documentation & Information: https://british-caving.org.uk
Here you will find all LCMLA and CIC documentation, including course syllabuses, resource materials, and general information about the BCA.
4. First Aid Certificates
Some award holders may have uploaded their First Aid certificate to the QMS. Please note: this function will be discontinued after December 2025.
If you have uploaded a copy, make sure you download and save it for your own records.
5. Online Payments
JustGo who provide our online system QMS, are moving to a new supplier for online payments. This should not cause any issues for you and will gradually allow you to chose a variety of payment methods.
6 Vertical Leader Updates
a. Care in using a Traxion (or other toothed jamming device) in hauls at pitch heads.
A Traxion is recognised as a highly versatile hauling device; however, users must be aware of its limitations. In line with the manufacturer’s guidance, the QMC continues to advise against using a Traxion (or any other toothed jamming device) as a belay device. When using a Traxion or any pulley/jammer combination, it is essential to avoid dynamic loading, regardless of the fall distance. A common scenario is managing a hauled person onto a ledge, where slack can develop in the system and create the potential for a dynamic load. This risk is significantly reduced by securing the casualty’s cowstails to a traverse rope before any slack is introduced into the hauling system. Tests conducted by Petzlunderline the need for caution.
b.UIAA 110 Standard.
QMC have been made aware of a new rope standard set out by the UIAA (110) relating to “Static Ropes”. These ropes are not the same as low stretch ropes which are subject to the EN 1891/ UIAA 107 standard as recommended in the QMCs “Vertical Leader Ropework” document. QMC continue to recommend the use of rope with EN 1891 standard in the leadership schemes.
c. Locking Karabiners on Cowstails.
QMC advises Vertical Leaders to use at least one fully locking karabiner on a cowstail. When selecting hardware, ensure it is a true locking mode, some “via ferrata” style connectors (e.g., “wire-locks”) are not fully locking and must not be relied upon for this purpose. QMC recommends either a screwgate or a triple-action auto-locking karabiner for cowstails, and stresses that users must remain vigilant in their selection, inspection, and use.
