Further to yesterday’s message (UPDATE Path closure at Sgwd Isaf Clun Gwyn) we have received the following new information from NRW.
- The fence at the foot of the slope has been erected to prevent public incursion into an active worksite – i.e. the area between the waterfall and the fence.
- Since there will be no works taking place on Saturdays and Sundays, gorge-walking groups may enter the area freely (from above or below), crossing the fence at the far end of the site (as shown by the blue circle in the attached image).
- However, on weekdays, gorge walking leaders must first check whether there are any active works ongoing and, if so, they must liaise with the contractor on site to obtain permission to enter the area (either from the waterfall or by passing over the fence). We appreciate that groups may not wish to commit to a gorge journey without knowing in advance whether this access will be possible, although we’re hoping the contractors will make every effort to oblige; if you do try this out, please let us know how well it’s working.
NB:
- gorge-walking leaders must satisfy themselves that the fence is suitable for crossing with their group before attempting to do so (i.e. the act of climbing the fence is at your own risk!);
- loose materials etc. may be present on site, so appropriate caution should be exercised in the work area; and
- please be prepared to assure members of the public that you have ‘special permission’ to be in this area and they shouldn’t be tempted to follow you!
We hope this offers a workable compromise compared with the complete closure of the path. NRW will monitor the situation and if it becomes untenable for the contractors to progress their works in a safe and timely manner, they may need to revisit this decision – so please do your best to make things easy for them.
