Dry weather implications for paddling on the Wye

SWOAPG has received the following message from the Environment Agency, the navigation authority for the Wye downstream of Hay:

“If the current hot, dry spell persists and ecological damage becomes a significant risk (such as canoeists, on stretches where there is insufficient depth, getting out and walking, trampling gravels etc), it may become necessary to temporarily prohibit, restrict or regulate the navigation and use of certain parts of the river in accordance with Article 19 of the Wye Navigation Order 2002.

“Please monitor the situation yourselves and cease activity voluntarily when the risk becomes significant. If you do suspend use in certain sections of the river we would be grateful if you notify us to this effect.

“We will keep this situation under review and will update you periodically. Thank you in anticipation of your co-operation, please contact me if you want to discuss this matter.”
