DESCRIPTION:The British Canoeing Paddlesport Instructor qualification is for people aged 14+ whose main focus of work is delivering paddlesport taster/starter sessions within clubs\, centres or other organisations. The qualification is not discipline specific and is suitable for instructors who work with paddlers from any of the competitive and non-competitive paddlesport disciplines. \n\n\n\nThe process of completing the qualification aims to help prepare candidates for their first paddlesport instructing role; ‘primed and ready’. \n\n\n\nVenue: Brecon (TBC) \n\n\n\nCost £180 (maximum) per person (non-residential). \n\n\n\nCandidates need to: \n\n\n\nbe aged 14 or over;be members of Canoe Wales / British Canoeing (etc.);register for the Award with Canoe Wales / British Canoeing (etc.) – cost £45;have attended a British Canoeing Foundation Safety and Rescue Training (FSRT) course; andhave personal paddling (equivalent to the former 2*-level) and rescue competence in one type of craft (kayak\, open canoe\, sit on top\, or stand up paddleboard).

If more than 2 candidates attend\, I will aim to reduce this fee if I can.

SUMMARY:17 Jun 2022 British Canoeing Foundation Safety & Rescue Training course (by Steve Rayner Outdoor Pursuits)
DESCRIPTION:The FSRT course is intended for all paddlers\, coaches and volunteers irrespective of craft or discipline choice\, and is available in either bank-based or boat-based option (or a combined course covering both). It provides training on key skills needed to operate safely and deal with common emergencies in a sheltered water environment in any craft. Candidates should be competent paddling in both kayak and canoe to enable them to complete the course\, although it is not necessary formally to hold a Personal Performance Award. \n\n\n\nThe FSRT course is a pre-requisite for the British Canoeing Paddlesport Instructor Award. It comprises a minimum of 8-hours training and is usually conducted over one long day; this course will take place in Brecon. \n\n\n\nNo minimum age (although paddlers must be physically able to undertake the course!). \n\n\n\nMax. £80 each (depending on numbers). DESCRIPTION:Date change: previously advertised as 7-8 Jun \n\n\n\nThe British Canoeing Coach Award is an entry point qualification which offers discipline-specific pathways across all disciplines. The Award is designed for people whose core function is to coach paddlers who want to gain/improve paddlesport skills\, such as beginners new to the sport\, or paddlers looking to develop their skills in the given discipline or environment. \n\n\n\nThe Coach Award content is delivered through 2-day Core Coach Training and 2-day Discipline Specific Training (22 disciplines currently available\, including Sheltered Water Kayak and/or Canoe; White Water Kayak; White Water Canoe; and Open Water Canoe). \n\n\n\nThe two-day Core Coach Training course introduces the shared coaching content that is relevant to all coaches at this level\, exploring different approaches to coaching\, understanding and enabling learning; and some core coaching skills. It is not specific to any one discipline and will make use of a variety of craft to explore different approaches to coaching and introduce some core coaching skills. The course will be a blend of classroom and water-based activity; and you will also be supported a personal coaching development plan to enable you to take your learning into practice after the course. \n\n\n\nSubsequent Discipline Specific Training will then focus on how to coach discipline-specific technical and tactical skills\, helping coaches to plan and deliver safe\, enjoyable\, progressive coaching sessions and explore specifics to help coach typical athletes/learners relevant to the discipline. \n\n\n\nThe course fee will be £200 which includes coaching\, equipment and certification. \n\n\n\nCandidates need to have: \n\n\n\nFull ‘on the water’ membership of Canoe Wales / British Canoeing (etc.); andA base level of knowledge about the discipline(s) you wish to coach.

DESCRIPTION:All my courses will be run in accordance with Covid-19 regulations and guidance. \n\n\n\nThe British Canoeing Paddlesport Instructor qualification is for people aged 14+ whose main focus of work is delivering paddlesport taster/starter sessions within clubs\, centres or other organisations. The qualification is not discipline specific and is suitable for instructors who work with paddlers from any of the competitive and non-competitive paddlesport disciplines. \n\n\n\nThe process of completing the qualification aims to help prepare candidates for their first paddlesport instructing role; ‘primed and ready’. \n\n\n\nWhile there remain restrictions on indoor gatherings\, courses may include video-conference sessions to cover ‘classroom’ topics. These will usually be a few days before and/or after the main ‘practical’ (outdoor) sessions\, arranged to suit participants on each course. The dates shown below are for the ‘practical’ sessions only. \n\n\n\nVenue to be confirmed (somewhere in the Brecon area). \n\n\n\nCost £180 (maximum) per person (non-residential). \n\n\n\nCandidates need to: \n\n\n\nbe aged 14 or over;be members of Canoe Wales / British Canoeing (etc.);register for the Award with Canoe Wales / British Canoeing (etc.) – cost £45;have attended a British Canoeing Foundation Safety and Rescue Training (FSRT) course; andhave personal paddling (equivalent to the former 2*-level) and rescue competence in one type of craft (kayak\, open canoe\, sit on top\, or stand up paddleboard).

SUMMARY:23 Mar 2022 British Canoeing Foundation Safety & Rescue Training course (by Steve Rayner Outdoor Pursuits)
DESCRIPTION:The FSRT course is intended for all paddlers\, coaches and volunteers irrespective of craft or discipline choice\, and is available in either bank-based or boat-based option (or a combined course covering both). It provides training on key skills needed to operate safely and deal with common emergencies in a sheltered water environment in any craft. Candidates should be competent paddling in both kayak and canoe to enable them to complete the course\, although it is not necessary formally to hold a Personal Performance Award. \n\n\n\nThe FSRT course is a pre-requisite for the British Canoeing Paddlesport Instructor Award. \n\n\n\nThe FSRT course comprises a minimum of 8-hours training and is usually conducted over one long day; this course will take place in Brecon. \n\n\n\nWhile there remain restrictions on indoor gatherings\, most courses will include video-conference sessions to cover ‘classroom’ topics. These will usually be a few days before and/or after the main ‘practical’ (outdoor) sessions\, arranged to suit participants on each course. The dates shown below are for the ‘practical’ sessions only. \n\n\n\nNo minimum age (although paddlers must be physically able to undertake the course!). \n\n\n\n£75 each. SUMMARY:Wed 16 Feb 2022 Waterfall Country Gorges: a Practical Workshop to consider how Activity Providers can help care for these special places
DESCRIPTION:Those of you using the Waterfall Country gorges in the last year or so will be well aware of the immense pressure that the area is under from visitors – which is having a significant adverse impact on the gorge environment. We know that gorge-walking groups are not a significant part of the problem – in fact we think there’s a lot we can do to help! \n\n\n\nSWOAPG has therefore planned this onsite workshop\, based around the Mellte gorge\, to see what we can do to help alleviate some of the problems being caused by visitor numbers and behaviour. \n\n\n\nThe idea of the workshop (which will be facilitated on behalf of SWOAPG by Lee Garbett of Quest Adventures – and hopefully attended by all the major gorge-walking providers as well as environmental and safety organisations) is to share concerns and ideas and generate some key messages and good practice for groups using the gorge\, which SWOAPG will then disseminate more widely. Topics to be addressed will include how providers might… \n\n\n\nbetter understand and continue to minimise their own impact on the fragile gorge environment;help keep the area in good condition e.g. by collecting and disposing of rubbish; andinfluence the behaviour of the general public to better look after the gorge environment (and their own safety!).\n\n\n\nThe intention is to cover the section of river between Sgwd Clun Gwyn and Sgwd y Pannwr.
